Trade war fears grow as China responds to Trump's tariffs

US president Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, from April 9, are set to hit China, India, Taiwan, South Korea and many other countries hard; China has responded in kind sparking a global trade war threat.

From April 9, China will be hit with 34% tariffs,which the White House confirmed are on top of the 20% already imposed by the US around 13% of Chinese goods went to the US in 2024. The tariffs on China also includes Hong Kong, and the US is Hong Kong's second largest export market. 

US Donald Trump confirmed the move in the White House last week at the Rose Garden on April 2.
